Atmospheric vs. Low-Pressure Plasma – Choosing the Right Technology

Understanding the differences between atmospheric and low-pressure plasma is essential for selecting the right technology. Atmospheric plasma operates at ambient pressure—substrates do not require sealed chambers. This enables continuous, inline processing with lower equipment complexity and costs.
Low-pressure plasma, while requiring vacuum chambers, offers advantages including greater free travel length for particles and fewer impact processes. It can be more effective for certain applications where precise control over reaction pathways is critical.
Atmospheric pressure plasma systems typically produce higher plasma densities (10¹¹–10¹⁶) and are ideal for applications where rapid, continuous processing is prioritized. However, processing conditions differ substantially from reduced-pressure systems, which may increase equipment costs.
Both technologies effectively modify surface chemistry. Atmospheric DBDs sustained in ambient air offer lower cost, while plasma jets tend to produce higher fluxes of reactive oxygen species—advantageous for surface functionalization where improved hydrophilic properties are desired. The choice ultimately depends on specific application requirements, production volume, and budget considerations.
